Diabetic Shoes and Insoles in Louisville, KY

Compassionate Podiatry Services in Louisville, KY

What to Expect During Your First Visit

At New Horizons Foot and Ankle Associates in Louisville, Kentucky, we provide specialized diabetic shoes and orthotics to enhance foot health and prevent complications associated with diabetes. Here’s what you can expect during your appointment for diabetic shoes and insoles:

Comprehensive Foot Examination

Your podiatrist will begin by taking 3D images of your feet and conducting a thorough examination. This may involve observing how you walk to assess the movement of your feet, ankles, legs, and hips, ensuring a complete understanding of your biomechanics.

Custom Foot Mold

To ensure a precise fit, your podiatrist may create a mold of your feet. This custom mold guarantees that the orthotics will match the unique contours and structure of your feet, providing optimal support and comfort.

Design & Material Selection

Diabetic orthotics are custom-made inserts (insoles) designed to provide extra cushioning and support for sensitive diabetic feet. These orthotics are typically softer than those for non-diabetic patients and may have a deeper shape to secure the foot and prevent sores and ulcers from forming or worsening. They can be crafted from various materials, including foam, gel, and fabric, and are available in different shapes and sizes.

Wearing & Adjustment Period

After being fitted for your orthotics, you should wear them consistently, both indoors and outdoors. Start by wearing them for 30–45 minutes each morning, gradually increasing the duration over the next two weeks. After this adjustment period, you should be able to wear them for up to eight hours a day. Don’t worry – we will provide you with a folder with all the instructions clearly written out so that you can start benefiting from your diabetic shoes and orthotics!

Maintenance & Care

To maintain the hygiene and effectiveness of your orthotics, wash them thoroughly with gentle soap after each shower. Proper care ensures their longevity and continued support for your feet.
